Start with the problem
If your main frustration is washing, start by discussing a coating. If it is stone chips on the bonnet and bumper, discuss film coverage. They serve different purposes, so comparing them as two versions of the same upgrade can lead to an expensive mismatch.
For a Richmond daily driver, we ask about motorway use, outdoor parking, previous paint repairs and how the car is washed. For a weekend car, we also ask which roads it sees. The badge matters less than the exposure and condition of the panels you want to protect.
What a ceramic coating does
A ceramic coating is applied to a prepared surface and cures into a thin bonded layer. Its practical benefit is a surface that is easier to wash and release contamination from. The polished appearance comes largely from the preparation beneath it; coating over swirl marks does not remove them.
It is not a cushion against stones, a scratch-proof shell or permission to use an automatic brush wash. Grit in a mitt can still mark coated paint. Choose a coating because its cleaning benefits suit your routine, and ask what preparation is included in the price.
What film does differently
Paint protection film is a transparent physical layer fitted over selected panels. It helps reduce damage from road debris and minor abrasion. High-impact areas often include the front bumper, bonnet and mirror caps; sills and luggage edges may deserve attention for different reasons.
Film can still be marked or damaged. Some products can recover light surface marks under specified conditions, but that is not a promise to repair deep scratches or punctures. Edges and seams may be visible, so review the pattern, finish and coverage before agreeing to installation.
| Your priority | Ceramic coating | Paint protection film |
|---|---|---|
| Easier routine washing | The main reason to consider a coating | Depends on the film’s surface treatment |
| Stone-chip exposure | No meaningful impact protection | A physical layer to reduce impact damage |
| Existing swirls | Preparation may include correction | Installation does not remove the underlying defects |
| Scope of the quote | Preparation, surfaces and coating system | Exact panels, patterns and edge treatment |
When combining them makes sense
A front-impact film package with coating on the remaining paint can suit a car that sees regular motorway kilometres. Film addresses exposed panels; coating makes washing the uncovered bodywork easier. Full-body film is a separate coverage decision, rather than an automatic next step.
A compatible coating may also be applied over film. Check the selected products and application instructions first. Some films already have a hydrophobic topcoat, so the quote should explain what an additional coating contributes rather than treating it as compulsory.
Preparation and the quote
Protection begins with a washed, decontaminated surface and an inspection. New cars can arrive with transport contamination or delivery wash marks. Older cars may have chips, repairs or deeper defects that need to be recorded. Polishing is agreed where appropriate; it is not a reason to remove more paint than necessary.
NOIR’s ceramic treatment starts at $1,450 AUD and includes single-stage gloss refinement. PPF starts at $2,250 AUD, with exact panel coverage confirmed in the quote. These are different scopes, not directly comparable whole-car prices. Vehicle size, condition, preparation and coverage determine the total; all listed prices include GST.
Washing after installation
Follow the first-wash and curing instructions supplied for the actual coating or film. There is no universal waiting period for every product. Wash on cool panels out of direct sun, rinse loose dirt before contact and keep wheel-cleaning tools separate from the bodywork.
Avoid directing a pressure-washer jet into film edges. Use the installer’s recommended products and check any distance or pressure guidance. Promptly remove contamination using a suitable gentle method. If an edge lifts or a stain persists, ask the installer before trying an aggressive cleaner.
A practical starting point
For a new car mainly used around town, discuss a coating and a documented inspection first. For frequent motorway driving, ask for a panel-by-panel front-impact film quote. For an older car with wash marks, agree the correction scope before deciding which protection follows.
You do not need to choose a package before visiting. Send the model, describe the paint condition and identify the panels or maintenance problem that concern you. We can then explain what each option changes, what it leaves unresolved and how much time the work needs.
Questions for your quote
Ask for these answers in writing before booking the work.
- Which panels and surfaces are included?
- What wash marks or defects will remain?
- How will seams and edges be finished?
- Which products, curing instructions and written coverage apply?
- Is a film follow-up inspection included?
